The Pop-Up City Research Initiative is producing the first systematic analysis of pop-up cities. We collect data from interviews and surveys with attendees, organizers, locals, contributors and sponsors on how the experience worked, as well as operational data on what actually happened — finances, governance, outputs.
Findings will be published in a public good report at the end of April 2026. The report defines what pop-up cities are and aren't, classifies them into archetypes, compares them and integrates them with adjacent ecosystems and communities, identifies failure modes and delivers a practical reference for operators, funders, and host governments.
To date, we completed 71 interviews across 48 pop-up cities and organisations. Surveys are now open.
